Built Environment Commitment

The Commitment is an industry-wide initiative. By taking part you can achieve recognition and tangible business benefits, and will be contributing with others towards the goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

Delivering a low carbon, resource efficient built environment will require the action of organisations across the entire sector. Many have already begun to change how they work, others are at the start of their journey. The Built Environment Commitment brings all this action together and publicly demonstrates what each organisation that signs up is committed to do.

Developed in consultation with industry, the Built Environment Commitment is a strategic priority of Construction 2025 – the industrial strategy for construction.

What is it?

The Built Environment Commitment provides an easy and practical framework for action by businesses and sector bodies throughout all areas of the built environment to lower carbon and improve resource efficiency in their everyday activities.

The framework gives flexibility to enable individual organisations to make their own journey of improvement. It supports the sector driving collective action, encouraging a consistent approach to measuring and reporting, and promoting sharing of good practice.

The Built Environment Commitment centres around a simple statement of intent – each signatory commits to take action that contributes to a more low carbon, resource efficient built environment.

Your organisation's commitment to take action can be made on issues with single aspects, such as packaging, or on issues which have multiple aspects, such as energy, water, waste or carbon. You set out your own journey of what you want to achieve in support of the statement of intent, and how you want to get there.

If you are already dedicated to doing this - perhaps you can now help others by sharing good practice. If you are new to this, don’t worry - there is plenty of guidance available here to help you.

Who is it for?

The Commitment is open to all organisations across the built environment sector, including:

  • Funders and investors
  • Construction clients, contractors, designers and suppliers
  • Asset owners, managers and occupiers
  • Government and policy makers
  • Professional, trade and sector bodies

How does it work?

The Built Environment Commitment provides an easy and practical framework for action by businesses and sector bodies throughout all parts of the built environment to lower carbon and improve resource efficiency in their everyday activities.

The Commitment is led by a simple statement of intent to which all Signatories sign up to and publicly support:

“We commit to take action that contributes to a lower carbon, resource efficient built environment.”

Signatories then individually establish what they specifically want to achieve in support of the statement of intent, and how they want to get there – they therefore each take an individual journey in lowering carbon and improving resource efficiency. This enables each Signatory to reflect, for example: their current performance, corporate priorities, and aspects they can influence and take action on.
